The Fourth of July
Do you want to now what Fourth of July is? I will tell you. The Fourth of July is America’s birthday. It is the anniversary of the day that they signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776. We have a celebration of America’s freedom. We have parades; fireworks and we enjoy friends and family. We have picnics outside with hot dogs and hamburgers and lots of different food that everyone brings. I like macaroni salad and hamburgers. First we go to the parade and watch the band and the floats and the fire company go by. Then we go to our house and have a picnic. Some people go to the beach or go swimming. At night we go and watch fireworks shoot off. It is lots of fun. Some fireworks are so huge, they fill the whole sky. That’s what Fourth of July is like.

Independence Day
I am going to talk to you about my favorite holiday. There are 365 days an year. There are about 15 holidays each year. But one holiday interests me the most. And that is Independence Day.
First of all, what is Independence Day? As the Declaration of Independence quotes:
We these truths to be self-evident
That all men are created equal
That they are endowed by their creator
With certain unalienable rights
That among these is life, liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness
It yet still is not completely American. The British made the material. Independence day, by its name, is really the day we got independence. The British used to rule the United States. And the Declaration was made to free the 13 states. At the time, many people had to pay large taxes to do certain things. The people were tired of this so they went into revolution and started the Revolutionary War. Our country free. Luckily the British lost so on June11-june 28 the Declaration was made making our country free
Some of the famous people who made this and joined the Declaration are Benjamin Franklin. He, by research and experiments, created the lightning rod witch lightning gets attracted to and doesn’t strike the house. Also, Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd president of the United States, also signed the Declaration. Ben and Thomas were great friends. Thomas also created the design for the capital building for Richmond, Virginia. (Where I was born) Lastly, John Hancock was the first to sign the Declaration. He was born in Quincy, Massachusetts and is one of the most remembered through history that signed the document.
With all the things that we remember on the day, we could only possibly celebrate it with store bought fireworks. Although still many Americans don’t celebrate July4th, it’s still a government official holiday and it is a day that we remember what really made America. You can still see the declaration in Washington D.C where it is on display.

American Baseball
Baseball is the most popular sport in the United States .It has been played longer than any other sport. It came from the English game cricket. You have two leagues American and National. You also have four divisions north, south, east and western divisions.
In the regular season you fight for 7 months to see who is going to go to the Play Offs. There are about 45 teams that fight for the play offs and then for the World Series. When you see your favorite team playing, you just want them to win that game. In the game sometimes there are ties. Ties come down to extra innings, which means you play until someone wins. In baseball you win or lose. In baseball you have rakings and that is what gets you to the play offs.
After the regular season you have the play offs. The play offs get you to the World Series .In the play offs if you lose you go home right away and if you win you keep going until you lose. You can get to the World Series by wining and getting into first place (in your division). The first place in each divisions goes to the World Series.
After the reg. season you go to the play offs. In the play if you lose a certain amount of games you will be out. And if you win you will keep going. Only the top two will go two the World Series and the winner. In the play offs you have to play the best 3 out of 5 games. When you are cheering for your team it is nerve racking because you want them to win all the time.
Next you have the World Series. In the World Series you have 7 games. You have to win 4 to win the Championship trophy

American Football
Football is a sport played by many people. It is played with a small oval shaped ball. It has many positions for players to be. The positions are … Defensive lineman, Offensive lineman, running back, wide receiver, Defensive secondary, Quarter back, Kicker/Punter, and Linebacker. There are many different teams. My personal favorite is the New England Patriots. The object of the game is to score the most points until the clock runs out. Whoever scores the most points wins.

American Football
Hut, Hut Hike!! This is America’s favorite pastime in the
fall. Football is my favorite sport because I love to see people
get tackled. My brother always tackles me when we play.
Football is requiring men that can really take a beating. If you
are weak, football is not the sport for you. Football games are
very long. A football field is 100 yards long. To play football
you also need agility, speed, skill, and tactics. You also need
eye coordination. Last but not least you need 11 players for a team.
Super Bowl
Football is a sport played by many guys. It is played with a brown oval ball and kind of skinny at the end so it is easier to throw. When you play football there are positions such as Defensive lineman, Offensive lineman, Running back, Wide receiver, Defensive secondary, Quarterback, Kicker or the punter and Linebacker. There are many different teams. My favorite happens to be the Dallas Cowboys. Another good team is the New York Giants the idea of the game is to play your best until the clock runs out. The team that wins also wins the super bowl.

Groundhog’s Day
Groundhog Day
Groundhog Day is February 2 when winter is almost over and
everybody gathers around a groundhog’s hole. They wait for
Punxsutawney Phil to come out of his hole. If Phil sees his
shadow then winter won’t end and we will have six more weeks if
Phil doesn’t then we will have an early spring. We
celebrate it’s a tradition throughout the United States. In 1723
the Delaware Indians settled Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania as a campsite halfway between the Allegheny and the Susquehanna Rivers. The name Punxsutawney comes from the Indian name for the location “ponksad-uteney” which means “the town of the sand flies.” Approximately 90% of the time, Phil sees his shadow.
Punxsutawney is where everyone gathers and waits for Phil.

The robin is 7 inches tall and has a wingspan of 8 inches. The robin is actually a red-breasted thrush and is called a robin because it looked like the European robin. The robin eats grubs, worms, and berries it mostly eats worms and berries. Robins are many states state bird. The robin eats maple leafs and maple sap. Males share roosts with the female only in breeding season. Robins have been doing better since man arrived. Male robin territory in breeding season is 0.3 to 0.5 acres. Thanksgiving
Almost every culture in the world has held celebrations of thanks for a plentiful harvest. The American Thanksgiving holiday began as a feast of thanksgiving in the early days of the American colonies almost four hundred years ago.
In 1620, a boat filled with more than one hundred people sailed across the Atlantic ocean to settle the new world. This religious group had begun to question the beliefs of the church of England and they wanted to separate from it. The pilgrims settled in what is now the state of Massachusetts.
Personally I just sit around the table and eat with my family.
This is only part of what Thanksgiving is.

Thanksgiving
In 1620, a boat filled with more than one hundred people sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to settle in the New World. The New World is a place that is now called Massachusetts. Their first winter in the New World was difficult. They had no food to. Half their colony died from diseases. The next spring the Mashpee Wampanoag Indians taught them how to grow corn and other foods. They also showed them how to fish and hunt for animals. In the autumn of 1621, crops of corn, beans, and pumpkins were harvester. The colonists were thankful for the food they got, so they planned a feast. The Indians brought deer to roast with the turkeys and other wild food. The colonists learned how to cook cranberries and different kinds of food. To this first Thanksgiving, the Indians had even brought popcorn. That is what Thanksgiving is.

At my Thanksgiving we have turkey, mashed potatoes, and a whole bunch of other stuff. My favorite is the turkey. The best part of Thanksgiving is being with your family. I like the desert the most. The desert is usually chocolate cream pie .YUM! Thanksgiving is a great American holiday.

Veterans Day
Veteran’s day was originally called Armistice Day after World War I. In World War II it was know as Veteran’s Day to honor unidentified veterans in the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers in Virginia, at Arlington National Cemetery. The tomb is for the unidentified Veterans that fought in World War I and World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.
There is an Army honor guard that stands outside all day and night, on every day. There is a ceremony is held at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers with a color guard playing taps on Veteran’s day.
That is how Veteran’s day came to be.

Veterans Day
We celebrate people that were in any kind of war. It was first called Armistice Day, but now it is called Veterans Day. It took 17 year’s for it to become a national holiday. We have a special day it is November 11. It is that date because that is when the World War I ended on November 11, at 11:00.
Our school staff has some people that were either in some kind of war or was a nurse in the armed forces or served in peacetime in the armed forces, so we celebrated those people on Veterans Day.
This year all of Brooklyn Middle School went to the auditorium, watched a slide show of pictures found on the computer. We also sang the national anthem and said the pledge of allegiance. Then we went to the classroom.

We celebrate it because in 1809 the tradition started with a group of friends, neighbors, everyone got together and formed PUAS so they could enjoy fruits and other things and so they formed so they could socialize and exchange ideas. There’s big rides and little rides there is fast rides AND RIDES WHERE YOU CAN`T EVEN GET OF THE WALL! Some rides are slippery because your sliding downs a HUGE slide! My favorite ride is star space because you go in a space ship and it spins you! It’s so much fun because you cant get of the wall! Some person was on the ceiling! After that you can get the best food like big pretzels, fried dough, slush puppies, and that’s a slushy and so much more! They all taste delicious and wonderfully tasty! During lunch when you are eating people do fun things like tricks raffles and sometimes just fun music. The park is so much fun when there are a lot of people there is a lot of people because hat means they will keep the park open longer. Everybody there has so much fun so the park will stay longer. But mostly to the end it fun because a lot more people leave so the fun keeps getting more and more great! The rides have light on at night its so much fun when the lines are short so you can go on the rides over and over again so you can go on the rides that have lights on them so it looks like you are shinning in the light. Doesn’t that make you so exited you want to go to it?

The Brooklyn Fair is one of the oldest in our country. In 1809 the tradition began with a group of friends, neighbors and family who got together and formed the Pomfret United Agricultural Society. They got together during the harvest season to enjoy fruits of their labor, sharing techniques of farming. They started it so they could socialize and exchange ideas with other residents.
There are lots of rides but you need to buy tickets for them. There are about 100 contests too and there’s loads of concession stands, my favorite is Dip and Dots! There are sooooooo many animals such as horses, donkeys, pigs, cows, lamas and chickens. The pigs are HUGE the babies are like as big as a computer! Cows they were just so fat, cute and fluffy! Some llamas were getting their haircuts. The chickens were big I have never seen a chicken that big! The horses are always doing the same thing the rides in a circle! My favorite is the donkey because, all you hear is eawwwww!!! eawwwww!!!

Halloween
Halloween is the holiday where people dress up as anything, from sports stars to pirates, and trick-or-treat. (Going from door to door and asking for candy!) Your neighbors are usually prepared with a bowl full of candy! Last year for Halloween I was a vampire. This year I was a Devil princess. Some people decorate with carved-out pumpkins called jack-o-lanterns. You carve faces in the pumpkins and put candles in them. The colors of Halloween are orange and black. The name “Halloween” comes from “All hallows eve,” the night before “All hallows day.”
Halloween originated in Ireland as the end of the summer and the beginning of a new year. The Celts believed that the souls of the people who had died within the last year would come back to find living bodies to possess. If they failed, they would have no chance in the after life. The people dressed up and ran in the streets to scare the spirits away.

Halloween
Halloween is on October 31.It is usually in the fall at night. It is when some children dress up in funny, scary, or just entertaining costumes and Trick-or-Treat. Trick-or-Treating is when kids dress up in ghoulish costumes and ask for candy at their neighbor’s doors and yell ”TRICK -OR-TREAT!” And your neighbors are prepared to give you candy.
I don’t decorate much but my neighbors do a lot. Most of the decorations are candles with Jack-O-Lanterns on them; I also have a Jack-O-Lantern twirl for my staircase, which swivels around the poles. A Jack-O-Lantern is a pumpkin (an orange vegetable) that has been carved into a scary or funny face.
Halloween originates in Ireland .The Celtic people believe that the souls came back from the dead and wanted to posses a body and no one wanted to be possessed, so they put on foolish costumes and ran in the street to scare the spirits away. Today kids dress in all kinds of costumes from scary to silly Last year I was a Diva-Cat. I had blue, sparkly ears and a blue fluffy tail.
Well, I love Halloween because I get candy and get to spend time with friends and family!

Pledge of Allegiance
August 1892, the Pledge of Allegiance was written. To do the Pledge of Allegiance you would put your right hand over your heart and face the flag. The color of our flag is red, white, and blue. The American Revolution Daughters changed the Pledge words. Now people in American schools say the Pledge of Allegiance every day. You look at the flag when you do the Pledge of Allegiance. The Pledge of Allegiance was written because of the Civil War, when America was at war with itself, fighting against slavery. It was meant to bring people together after all the hard feelings after the war.

Long Island Sound
In America there is a state called Connecticut (where I live) and Connecticut has a place called Long Island Sound. Long Island Sound is a major estuary (an estuary is a semi-enclosed body of water that has a free connection with the open sea.) Near the New York and Connecticut area. Long island sound is about 18 trillion gallons in volume. The coastline is about 600 miles. It is pretty big to me. Long island sound is a wonderful place, especially the sea life there. There are many fin fish, including 21 tropical species that stray here seasonally But some fish in Long Island sound are not supposed to be there. They are supposed to be somewhere else like the Asian shore crab. Its nickname is The Japanese shore crab. The Asian crab is supposed to live in Asia but when big boats sailed to Asia and America the crabs stuck on boats and were brought to Long Island sound. Now the Asian shore crab is all over the shore of Long Island sound. There are also other animals like the green crab, Lionfish, and the Mute swan and many more. Long island sound is a very cool place.

Martin Luther King Day
Hi do you know what Martin Luther King Day is? Well M.L.K. day is a mark of a revolution. You see M.L.K was a black man, and until a certain point in time black people were slaves to white men and did
not have the political right to vote or get fair jobs.
M.L.K. was a Baptist and had a wife and four kids.
The discrimination was so bad back then the black children could not even go to the same school as the
white children. If you were black you would not be
able to sit with a white man on the local busses. If you even touched a white man you could be arrested
or even publicly beaten to death.
But M.L.K. divided to take a stand for the black people and himself. So M.L.K. grouped up everyone that would come, and together they did a boycott of the busses. The boycott lasted 386 days. They all ether walked or helped each other to there masters homes some whites even helped. M.L.K. did many speeches in his time but the one that seemed to be he most remembered was the I have a dream speech. This speech was about his dream about peace, love and kindness to all in the country to all blacks and all whites. But M.L.K. was assassinated in 1968.

American Money
The lowest amount of American money is the cent or the penny. The penny is equivalent to but a single cent. Basically a penny or cent is a 100th of a dollar. The 2nd lowest form of American money is the nickel. The nickel is worth 5 cents. The 3rdis the dime. The dime is worth 10 cents. Then the quarter which is worth 25cents. Last is the half dollar, it’s worth 50 cents.
Next is the main event, the dollar. The dollar is equal to 100 penny’s, or 20nickels, or 10 dimes, or 4 quarters, or 2 half dollars. If you want I could give you about 100 more ways to make change for a dollar. But now you’re going to learn about the basic dollar. There are two different dollars are the dollar bill and the dollar coin, they’re both worth the same. The lowest bill is worth dollar. The 2nd lowest is the 5-dollar bill. The 4thlowest is the 20-dollar bill. The 5th is the 50-dollar bill. One of the highest that people commonly use is the 100-dollar bill.

Ellis Island
Ellis Island is a small island in the upper bay of New York Harbor. It is right near the Statue of Liberty. Ellis Island is named after Samuel Ellis, a colonial New Yorker. It is thought that he came from Wales. It opened on January 1, 1892 and closed on November 12, 1954. Ellis Island is where all the immigrants had to go to become an American citizen.
Over 12 million immigrants became citizens through Ellis Island. The immigrants from Europe knew they were in the United States when they saw the Statue of Liberty. This is where the immigrants were given their last names. On June 14, 1897, the main immigration building burned to the ground. All the records were destroyed in the fire. When the building was rebuilt it had to be fireproof. The new building looks like a mansion or a capital building. It reopened on December 17, 1900 and 2,251 people became American citizens that day.
Ellis Island was known as the “Island of Tears” but this was not necessarily true. Only two percent of the immigrants were sent home. They were sent home if the doctor said they had a contagious disease or if the legal inspector thought that the immigrant was going to become a problem and cause trouble. Ellis Island became a museum on September 10, 1990.

Columbus Day
If you want to know why we celebrate Columbus Day, who Christopher Columbus was, and how we celebrate the holiday then this essay is for you!
Who was Columbus/Why is the holiday celebrated?
Christopher Columbus was the Spanish explorer who first discovered the Americas on October12, 1492, while looking for a short cut to India. This was a total accident, but he still went back to Europe and reported his findings (of what was later known as the Americas). And why we celebrate the holiday is now pretty obvious, we celebrate the holiday because Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas and the United States of America is in the Americas.
How we celebrate the holiday?
Columbus Day in the northeastern U.S. is the peak of the fall season, so most of us do fall things. Those fall things could be, leaf peeping, apple picking, picking a pumpkin for Halloween, or just taking a hike in the woods and playing in the leaves.
For those of you that don’t know what those things above are I will be explaining some of them in these next paragraphs.
Leaf peeping is popular with people in the southern U.S. Since they have no fall and it is the peak of fall in the northeast, people from all over the south drive all the way to the northeast to drive around, vacation, and look at the, red, orange, and yellow leaves.
I’m sure you are familiar with apple picking but I’ll just say one thing about it, the leaf peepers love to pick the prized, and famous northeast apple “the Macintosh.”
I’m sure you’re also familiar with pumpkin picking but not with the use of them on Halloween. On the American holiday Halloween we have a tradition of carving faces into pumpkins, (which are then called jack-o-lanterns) and putting a candle inside of them so they glow.
One thing I know I don’t have to explain is taking a hike and playing in the leaves.

Coyotes
Have you ever seen or heard about a Coyote? In America we have animals called Coyotes. I think they are amazing animals!
Most people think Coyotes are beautiful animals. Coyotes have grayish-brown to yellowish-brown fur. Their triangular ears stick up and they have a long muzzle. Coyotes have a long bushy tail, yellow eyes, and a black nose. These animals are similar to dogs because they have alike appearances and they both run with their tail down.
Coyotes live in various places. These places include all of the United States except for Hawaii. They are also found in Mexico, Central America, and most of Canada. Their habitats include fields, plains and bushy areas. Coyotes make their dens in rocky crevices, logs, caves or the den of another animal. They usually don’t dig their own den; they use an abandoned animal’s den and enlarge it.
Have you ever wondered about a coyotes diet? Coyotes hunt at night alone. They are carnivorous so their diet mostly includes mammals and sometimes birds and snakes. They prefer fresh kill, but do eat carrion. In fall and winter coyotes often eat fruits, vegetables and berries. If hunting a deer or large animal, they hunt in packs.
Have you ever heard a coyote howl in the distance? They use a lot of vocalization including barks, growls, yips, whines and howls. A long howl tells the pack where it is. A short bark warns other coyotes of danger. When a coyote is welcomed to the pack everyone yips!
I think coyotes are one of the most interesting animals. They’re appearance, habitats, diet and vocalization are fun things to learn about!

The bald eagle is a proud animal in United States to be exact it is our national symbol of the United States. It’s not really bald though they just call it that because it has white feathers on its head. And if u get a toy of it they take the sound of the golden eagle and put it for the bald eagle because the bald eagles sound, sounds like a little animal but truly their not small at all there wingspan can get up to three feet in height and can grow up to 7 feet tall. And can weigh up to 14 pounds and the females are 30% bigger than the males. They eat fish, rabbit, rattlesnakes, but they are also scavengers so they eat a lot of animals that are already dead. They live near rivers, lakes. Bald eagles live in the area to Florida to Alaska. When they mate they mate for life. And there nests are huge they can be 8 feet across and weigh over a ton. Their nests are usually in trees or cliffs. When a female bald eagle gives birth they only have 3 eggs and they are laid near December to march. They can live up to 20 to 30 years. They are an endangered species.

MAPLE SYRUP
Maple syrup is made from sugar maple trees. It is the sugary sap from the trees. It is a great topping for breads and pastries.
Maple syrup was said to be first created by a French settler in 1690. Maple syrup is made in a special process. First somebody taps a spout into a tree. Then slowly after a period of time the maple sap seeps through the spout and into a bucket. Next somebody takes this watery liquid and boils it down so most of the liquid evaporates; so then you get the thick sugary maple syrup. This process is called the sugaring. Sugaring is done during the early spring.
Here are some interesting facts. Did you know that a maple tree has to be at least 12 inches or more in diameter before it can be tapped? To make one gallon of syrup, you need 30-50 gallons of maple tree sap, because most of the watery sap is evaporated when it is boiled.
Maple tree sap can be made into many different things such as maple sugar, maple peanut brittle, maple butter, and maple cream. I like having maple cream on bagels! Have you ever had maple syrup?
Well anyway, no matter how you have it, you’ve got to try some delicious, marvelous, and scrumptious

Maple Syrup
Have you ever had a pancake? American style our pancakes are plain flat cakes and are very tasty. But its what you put on top that makes it yummy. Here in America we put butter and one more thing. I’ll give you a hint it’s brown and sticky. It’s syrup. Syrup is sweet and very tasty. And it goes way back in time.
The sap for syrup is taken from maple trees. It’s harvested in late winter and early spring. To make the syrup you have to gather the sap. In order to do that you have to put a spout in a sugar maple tree by tapping it. Then they collected it in a trough made from a hollowed branch. Lastly they put the sap in a container and heated it up an open fire until it thickens into SYRUP or turns into SUGAR.
I love it when my brothers decide to try to make pancakes. I only end up eating one because they’re all burnt. Then right as my mom walks in my sister spills her milk all over the floor. You can feel the anger that’s in the room. Oh no! Mom starts to open her mouth. She yelled “GET A RAG”.

Maple Syrup
Maple syrup is made in nature at Wisconsin. Sugaring season came when streams begin to trickle. All the animals wake up from there hibernation and the icicles start to melt to the ground. The maple syrup flows inside the tree on cold nights warm days with temperatures hirer than 40. Native Americans would move to a sugar camp to take the sap. They take the sap from hollowed out branches. They take all the sap and heat it over
an open fire. The Chippewa used tree sap as a drink, syrup, and candy the best time of the year was sugaring season to most tribes. Spring was the time for fun games and harvesting sap. An average maple will produce about 20 gallons of sap in the spring. I like syrup on pancakes and waffles I love maple syrup. Almost half of the people in the United States love maple syrup. So if you ever come to the United States you have to try maple syrup.

Carving love spoons is a tradition, which has been uniquely developed in Wales. It is traditional to give a gift in wood to celebrate the fifth wedding anniversary. One thing is sure enough the carving of love spoons a part of the welsh culture going back many years ago. Netball
Netball is a fun and exciting sport. It is usually played out-side and the games usually last up to a whole hour but there are at least 15 minutes during every break. There are different letters on a shirt that you wear to show where you stand and where you play, such as GS this means you score the goals, GA this person would have to work with GS and try and win the game. Netball is a non-contact sport, which means no one can physically hurt anyone. Netball is also normally played out side but can be played inside as well. This very popular game started in 1990 and now there are very big games played by famous netball players. You need quite good skill with a ball to throw all the different passes, such as shoulder pass chest past and under arm passes.

Rugby
Rugby is a game where you carry or pass a ball while running up the pitch against the opposition to try and score points. The other team has to try and tackle you and take the ball off you. When the ball goes off the pitch one of the other team’s players throws it back in. This is called a ‘line out’. Wales have a rugby team and I think they are a good team. In 2005 Wales won the Grand Slam. The Grand Slam is a big tournament for the country teams. My favourite player for the Welsh team is Steven Jones. The kicker for the team is Gavin Henson and the captain is Steven Jones. The coach of the team is Gareth Jenkins. Colour of their kit is red and white and they are sponsored by Brains the local brewery. They used to lose most of their games but they are better now and winning some. There is a cup called the Six Nations which is played for by Wales, England, Scotland, Ireland, France and Italy.

Cricket
Cricket is a bat-and-ball sport contested by two teams, usually of eleven players each. A cricket match is played on a grass field, roughly oval in shape, in the centre of which is a flat strip of ground 22 yards long, called a cricket pitch. A wicket, usually made of wood, is placed at each end of the pitch. The bowler, a player from the fielding team, bowls a hard, fist-sized cricket ball from the vicinity of one wicket towards the other.

May Day
May Day is on May 1st and it is a bank holiday where schools, libraries... have a day off. It is the time when the warmer weather is supposed to start. Although May Day is now the first day of the month of May, before 1752, when the calendar was changed, it was 11 days earlier. A tradition is maypole dancing. Maypole dancing is where you have ribbons attached to a pole right at the top and children and adults each take a ribbon and go round and round the pole to form a plait effect. All the ribbons are different colours so it looks really nice.

Guy Fawkes Day / Bonfire Night
On the night of November 5th, through out Britain, we commemorate the capture of Guy Fawkes with bonfires and fire works, and by burning an effigy of Guy. For 400 years, Bonfires have burned on November 5th to mark the failed Gunpowder plot. The tradition of Guy Fawkes – related bonfires actually began the very same year as the failed coup. The plot was foiled in the night between the 4th and the 5th of November1605. Already on the 5th, agitated Londoner’s who knew a little more than their king had been saved, joyfully lit bonfires on thanksgiving. As years progressed, how ever, the ritual became more elaborate. Preparations for bonfire night include making a dummy of Guy Fawkes, which is called “the Guy.” Some children even keep up an old tradition of walking in the street carrying the “guy” they have just made, and beg a passer-by for “a penny for the guy.” The kids use the money to buy fireworks for the evening festivities. Bonfire night is not only celebrated in Britain. The tradition crossed the oceans and established itself in the British colonies during the centuries.
