Before the cotton mill was built, the Tiffanys built their own dam on the Quinebaug River. After the mill was built the Tiffanys built themselves a mansion and three apartment houses for mill workers. By 1835 there were more than twelve buildings, including a store in the village.By 1848 after and Ebenezer Tiffany died ,the mill property was sold to businessmen from Rhode Island. These men formed the Quinibaug Company.
