The Brooklyn Town Hall used to be a court house. It was built in 1819-1820. The town hall's basement was a jail . Prudence Crandall of Canterbury was tried there for the "crime" of educating negro girls in her home in the 1840's. An addition in the rear was constructed in 1965. In 1896 voters accepted the property for town use.
